Abbey Niezgoda is joining New England Cable News and soon-to-be television station NBC Boston as a reporter.

"I’m so pleased and proud to announce that New England native and WVIT reporter Abbey Niezgoda will be joining our family later this spring" said NECN/NBC Boston vice president and news director Kenny Plotnik in an email.

Abbey joins NECN/NBC Boston from NBCUniversal sister-station WVIT NBC 30 (NBC Connecticut) in Hartford where she is currently a nightside reporter.

Before joining NBC Connecticut in September 2013, Abbey was a reporter at WLNE ABC 6 in Providence, RI. Her first news story was a feature on the penguins at Mystic Aquarium. After that, she covered everything from the Boston Marathon bombings to the Blizzard of 2013.

One of the most memorable moments of Abbey's career was watching a 12-year-old paralyzed gymnast stand up for the first time after suffering from a mysterious illness. She will also never forget sitting down with Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis, a Sandy Hook teacher now on a mission to spread kindness to children across the country.

Abbey has also been an intern at BIGfish Communications; WBZ CBS 4; WHDH NBC 7; and at the office of former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

A native New Englander, Abbey is a 2011 graduate of Emerson College in Boston where she earned a Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.

Abbey's first day at NECN/NBC Boston is May 30.
