Veteran news anchor Emily Rooney announced Thursday that she will step down as host of WGBH's Greater Boston in January 2015.

She will take on a new role as special correspondent to WGBH News and will continue to host the weekly Beat The Press program and appear regularly on 89.7 WGBH, continuing her Friday "Emily's List" appearances on Boston Public Radio.

Rooney has won numerous awards for her journalism and commentary, including the National Press Club’s Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism and a series of New England Emmy Awards. Most recently, Beat the Press was awarded the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism by the College of Communications at Penn State.

She launched WGBH’s Greater Boston in 1997, and shortly thereafter Beat the Press.

Before joining WGBH, Rooney was director of political coverage and special events at FOX Network in New York. Prior to that, she was executive producer of ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. She worked at WCVB-TV in Boston from 1979-1993, including three years as the local ABC affiliate’s news director.
