  • Kaitlyn McGrath is the weekend evening meteorologist at WVIT-TV NBC 30 (NBC Connecticut) in Hartford.

Kaitlyn joined NBC Connecticut in October 2015 from WCSC-TV CBS 5 in Charleston, SC where she has been a weather forecaster since starting her broadcasting career in January 2014. She also gained experience by working as a student reporter and weather forecaster at PBS station WUFT-TV, and has interned at KDKA-TV CBS 2 in Pittsburgh.

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Kaitlyn is a 2014 graduate of the University of Florida in Gainesville where she earned a Bachelor's degree in telecommunications-news broadcasting with a concentration in meteorology. She is currently furthering her weather education, and is enrolled in Mississippi State University's certificate of broadcast meteorology program, and expects to graduate in May 2017.

    1. What kind of phone do you have, and what are your favorite apps?
     I have an iPhone 5s

I am very active on social media as part of my job so Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are currently my favorite platforms.

    2. Favorite and least favorite news topics to cover (besides violent crime)?
I really enjoy covering active and extreme weather…severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, blizzards, you name it!  I even spent 10 days last summer chasing tornados throughout the Midwest.

As much as I love a beautiful sunny day, from a weather reporting perspective, it is not very exciting.

    3. If you weren't working in TV news, what would you be doing?
I was a dancer from an early age all the way through college, so if I were 5 inches taller, I would have loved to be a Radio City Music Hall Rockette!

    4. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
I used to love waking up really early on the weekends with my dad and watching the Animaniacs.

    5. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
I get outside as much as possible. Whether it’s going for a walk, bike, hike or skiing, I love being outdoors and active.

    6. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
Ireland. I would love to learn more about where my ancestors came from.

    7. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
Audrey Hepburn. She is such an inspiration because she used her remarkable film and fashion career in a positive way by performing years of humanitarian work with UNICEF and other organizations committed to helping the less fortunate, especially children.

    8. Do you collect anything?
     Photographs (and shoes!)

    9. What are the top 3 played songs on your iPod?
     Thunderstruck - ACDC
I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
     Proud Mary - Tina Turner

    10. What is one of your favorite quotes?
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.”- Reinhold Niebuhr

    11. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?
Choosing to complete the second semester of senior year of college remotely from Charleston, SC in order to begin my professional career six months before I graduated was a very difficult decision and a very challenging time in my life; however, in retrospect, I am very glad that I made the choice I did.
