  • Mario Hilario anchors NBC 10 Weekend Sunrise and reports during the week at WJAR-TV in Providence, RI.

    Mario joined NBC 10 in 1997, and has spent a big portion of his time outside of the newsroom getting involved in the community. He volunteers his time with a number of different nonprofit organizations, including Spurwink RI, which provides services to adults and children with developmental disabilities. He is also a member of Leadership Rhode Island's Alpha II Class, an organization that brings together community leaders from across Southern New England to examine issues facing Rhode Island and its future. Prior to NBC 10, Mario was a general assignment reporter for WLNE-TV in Providence. He's also served as anchor and managing editor for Metro News in Brockton, MA, and began his television career as a director at WLVI-TV in Boston.

    A native of Norwich, CT, Mario is a 1992 graduate of Emerson College in Boston.

    1. What kind of phone do you have, and what are your favorite apps?
     Work: Samsung Galaxy

     Personal: iPhone

     Favorite Apps: Facebook, Twitter, Periscope, Scrabble and Word With Friends (I’m a word geek!)

    2. Favorite and least favorite news topics to cover (besides violent crime)?
     Favorite: Young people accomplishing meaningful/thoughtful goals.

     Least Favorite: Animal Cruelty stories, they turn my stomach.

    3. If you weren't working in TV news, what would you be doing?
     Probably teaching at some level.

    4. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
     Bugs Bunny “What’s Up Doc?”

    5. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
     Catching up on my Scrabble/Word With Friends games (see question 1)

    6. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
     A long vacation to Australia and the South Pacific to be on the other side of the world!

    7. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
     I would have to say my Mom, who passed away. I would host a family dinner so she could be with the grandchildren she never got a chance to meet, but whom I know she loves and in whom her spirit lives on.

    8. Do you collect anything?
     Comic books as a child. I regret not holding on to them now.

    9. What are the top 3 played songs on your iPod?
     Anything ‘80s!

    10. What is one of your favorite quotes?
     “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”  It’s the way I try to approach every news story I do and the philosophy I try to live by in life.

    11. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?
     Living through my partner’s cancer fight. It makes you appreciate what truly matters in life.
