Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. announced today that Joseph McNamara has been appointed Vice President and General Manager of WFXR-TV (FOX/CW) and WWCW-TV (CW/FOX) serving the Roanoke-Lynchburg, VA DMA #67. Mr. McNamara’s appointment is effective immediately and he will report to Tim Busch, Co-Chief Operating Officer of Nexstar Broadcasting.

A well-respected industry veteran, Joseph McNamara has over three decades of broadcasting and management experience. Prior to joining Nexstar, from 2006-2013 Mr. McNamara served as the President and General Manager of KHON-TV (FOX/CW) in Honolulu, HI where under his leadership, the station increased viewership and revenue growth which drove record operating results.

Before joining KHON, Mr. McNamara spent 24 years in various capacities at WBNG-TV (CBS) in Binghamton, NY. Between 1982 and 1994 Mr. McNamara ascended from his initial role as an Account Executive to positions of increased responsibility serving as the National Sales Manager, Local Sales Manager, and General Sales Manager. He was promoted to President and General Manager of WBNG in 1994 and served in that capacity for 12 years. Under his multiple leadership roles, WBNG showed exemplary performance in client development, top viewer and revenue shares of market for over 20 years. Parallel to his duties at WBNG, Mr. McNamara also had corporate responsibilities at Gateway Communications including Sales Development, News Research, and served as a Regional Group Head with oversight for WBNG-TV and WTAJ-TV. Mr. McNamara began his broadcasting career in 1980 as an Account Executive for WTNH-TV (ABC) in Hartford/New Haven, CT and prior to that at WMGC-TV.

Commenting on the appointment, Tim Busch stated, “Joseph has an impressive broadcast pedigree running small and mid-size television operations. He is an executive with extensive experience in station management, local and national sales, news production and programming, as well as strategic planning across multiple media platforms. He has established a long-term record of strengthening station operations by developing and leading highly effective teams and implementing sales, marketing and new media initiatives which resulted in significantly better service to local viewers and local and national advertisers. With Joe’s 30 years of local broadcasting expertise, strong client relationships, and dedication to local communities, we are confident in his ability to lead our newly acquired Roanoke television and digital operations.

“With localism the paramount priority, WFXR, WWCW and our local digital operations will provide relevant, engaging content to our viewers, while delivering an enhanced marketing platform for local businesses and advertisers by expanding the station’s local programming initiatives and launching a market and regional-specific digital suite of products and mobile services.”

Commenting on his new role, Mr. McNamara stated, “Nexstar’s commitment to the local communities and regions that it serves is widely recognized throughout the industry. In this role, I will leverage the management experience and relationships built over my career to grow the operations and generate results while providing superior service to clients, advertisers, and local viewers. I am excited to work with the Roanoke team as we seek to deliver additional compelling local news and entertainment programming, as well as effective, multi-platform marketing solutions. I look forward to immediately immersing myself into the Roanoke community and becoming an active participant in the economic development of the area by developing strong relationships with local businesses and community organizations.”

Mr. McNamara is a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) where he received his Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing, Sales, and Personnel Management. Joseph currently serves on the boards of various Hawaii-based charities. He previously served as Chairman of The WB/CW 100 Plus Affiliate Board, The Great Aloha Run, Hawaii High School Band Champ, Hawaii USTA, Boy Scouts of America, Sunrise Terrace Assoc., MS Society, NYS Stop DWI Annual Tournament, Catholic Schools of Broome County, and The United Way.

Mr. McNamara and his wife Sue are immediately locating to the Roanoke community.
