Former print reporter John DiStaso is joining WMUR-TV ABC 9 as a political reporter, the station has announced.

John joins WMUR Political Director Josh McElveen and political reporter Adam Sexton to help lead the station’s Commitment 2016 political coverage in this important election cycle. Currently, WMUR is New Hampshire’s only statewide news-producing television station affiliated with a major network.

“We have a historic and exciting presidential primary season ahead of us, and across the country all eyes are on New Hampshire,” he said in a statement. “But the most important audience is the one right here in the Granite State. I’m thrilled to be a part of the WMUR team delivering breaking political news and analysis to the voters.”

For the past year, John served as News Editor for the New Hampshire Journal. Prior to that, for more than 30 years he worked as lead political reporter for the state’s largest newspaper: the New Hampshire Union Leader.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the past year at the New Hampshire Journal and appreciate the opportunity there, but it is now time to move on and be part of the best political news team in New Hampshire.”

John has appeared on television multiple times as a panel journalist in several nationally televised presidential primary debates as well as in many WMUR / Union Leader Granite State Debates. He has covered every New Hampshire Presidential Primary since 1980.

He was deeply involved in the Union Leader’s State House coverage on major stories including the construction and licensing of the Seabrook nuclear power plant, the landmark Claremont school funding lawsuit and the historic impeachment and subsequent acquittal of a former state Supreme Court Chief Justice.

A native of Paterson, NJ, John has lived in the Granite State for more thann 35 years, and currently resides in New Boston with his family. He is a 1975 graduate of Villanova University in Villanova, PA where he studied English & journalism. He also received a master’s degree in communication and media studies from William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ in 1979.

John's first day at WMUR is April 6.
