The ratings are in for the first month of 2017, how did everyone do?

January isn't normally a significant month for ratings, but this January is special. Why? Because it's the first January with WHDH 7 News as an independent station, and a brand new news station - WBTS NBC Boston. This month was so special, in fact, that WHDH took the unusual step to tout its single day ratings for January 2. Not to be outdone, both WCVB and WBZ also released single day ratings for January 3.

In the end, those numbers didn't really mean anything - the average of the whole month is what counts.

Here are the highlights in the A25-54 demo:

  • WCVB's NewsCenter 5 EyeOpener won from 4:30am-7am
  • WHDH finished ahead of WBZ (#2), WCVB (#3), and WBTS (#4) at Noon
  • WHDH won at 4pm
  • WCVB won 5pm-6pm
  • WCVB won at 6pm
  • WCVB won at 7pm
  • WHDH won at 11pm

In it's debut month, WBTS NBC Boston came in last place for most newscasts in Households, P2+, and A25-54 - however, WBTS came in 3rd at 4pm in Households pushing WFXT to last place.

Key comparisons to January 2016:

  • From 5am-7am: WBZ is up significantly, where the other stations have lost audience.
  • At noon: WBZ is up, WCVB has lost some audience, WHDH is down significantly.
  • At 6pm: WCVB has lost some audience, WHDH is down significantly.
  • A1 11pm: WBZ is up a small amount, WCVB is down - WHDH is down significantly.
