J.C. Monahan and Phil Lipof have been tapped to co-anchor WCVB-TV's weekday newscast NewsCenter 5 at 5 p.m.

The pair has been co-anchoring the newscast since the first of the year upon Lipof's arrival to Channel 5, but officially assume their roles on a permanent basis beginning Wednesday announced Bill Fine, WCVB President and General Manager.

"As a team, J.C. and Phil have a great rapport which is essential to establishing a successful and enduring news team," said Fine. "Their reporting styles and personalities have resonated very well with our viewers and we are confident that in their new roles, they will continue to retain our 'news leadership' position in the market."

“J.C. and Phil are seasoned and well respected journalists with strong ties to Boston, having both, coincidentally, grown up in Newton," said Andrew Vrees, WCVB News Director. "They bring a fresh, distinctive approach to covering the news and have a great way of connecting with the audience."

Monahan will continue to split her duties between NewsCenter 5 and co-anchoring Chronicle, WCVB's award winning nightly news magazine.

She joined Chronicle in May of 2013 as co-host alongside Anthony Everett. Monahan was previously the meteorologist for the weekday editions of WCVB's "The EyeOpener" and"Midday" newscasts, having joined the station from New England Cable News (NECN) in 2001. During her years as a meteorologist, Monahan had appeared on ABC's"Good Morning America" as a guest meteorologist.

Lipof joined Channel 5 in December 2013 from WABC, ABC's flagship station in New York City, where he anchored the weekend morning news and reported for the past seven years. Lipof has covered some of the major stories of the decade.

Most recently he returned home to Boston to report on the Marathon bombings, braved 80 mile per hour winds during "Superstorm Sandy" and, less than a year later, reported from the massive boardwalk fire in the same spot. He covered the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, travelled to Israel after 9/11 for a special series on terrorism and to Germany to speak with wounded troops.

Before his tenure at WABC, Lipof previously worked in the Boston market as a weekend anchor and, no stranger to WCVB, launched his career in journalism as an intern at Channel 5.
