News director bashes your newscast. How do you react?

There’s plenty of talk about harsh criticism TV journalists get from viewers.  But honestly, the toughest critics are often News Directors. With good reason.

Most of the time the points are valid, but the delivery of the message can be tough to take. Especially when you are flat out told, that newscast stunk and you better explain yourself.

So how do you explain it without throwing anyone else under the bus (because that will really unleash wrath for you)?

It’s all about taking ownership and being able to quickly adapt to your boss’ many expectations. You do that by asking pointed questions so you can get some concrete expectations in a very subjective job.  And remember, the critique can actually be a test to see if you have what it takes to be a manager soon.

For more on how to tell and ways to respond to a harsh critique look here.
