Liam Martin will be joining WBZ-TV CBS 4 in Boston as the co-anchor of WBZ News at 10 on MyTV 38 Monday-Thursday, New England One has learned. He will also report the for early evening and 11pm newscasts, as well as anchor at 6:30pm & 11pm on Sunday nights with Kate Merrill on WBZ.

Liam will be replacing Jonathan Elias, who is leaving to join WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. next month. David Wade will takeover as 6pm co-anchor on WBZ.

“We are excited to add one of the best reporters in Boston - and another Massachusetts native to our team of anchors.  Liam has excelled covering big stories – and we look forward to his contributions both as an anchor and reporter” said news director Gary LaPlante.

Liam was most recently a general assignment reporter at WCVB-TV ABC 5, a position which he resigned from yesterday. Whether or not Liam had a non-compete clause in his contract with WCVB is not an issue, we're told, as they are not enforcable in Massachusetts.

After New England One reported the news, Liam said on Twitter "I loved my three years at WCVB, but I've decided to take an anchoring position elsewhere. Very excited for what's next!"

He added in a statement through WBZ "I grew up watching WBZ, and I'm now incredibly honored to join one of the more storied local news organizations in the country.  I can't wait to get started."

Prior to joining NewsCenter 5 in 2012, Liam was an anchor and reporter at WILX-TV NBC 10 in Lansing, MI. While in Lansing, he did just about every on-air job at the station - weekend morning anchor; weekday morning anchor; weekday evening anchor; live storm chaser/reporter; sports anchor; sports reporter. He also shot and edited all of his own work, and occasionally produced. In 2011, he received the Broadcast Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for “Best Investigative Report”.

Liam started his career in journalism as a columnist for New England Sports Network. During his time there, he worked as a Celtics columnist for their website, NESN.com.

A native of the South Shore in Massachusetts, Liam is a 2006 graduate of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA where he earned a Bachelor's degree in government, as well as certifications in both Spanish and French. He is also a 2009 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he received his Master's degree in journalism.

Liam starts at WBZ on June 1.
