Breaking news happened this afternoon during The Real Story, and continued on Shepard Smith Reporting on the Fox News Channel.

A producer for FNC reported witnessing police in Baltimore chasing a man, and then what seemed like the police shooting him in the back. FNC reporter Mike Tobin also described witnessing a handgun on the ground and hearing a gunshot at the scene.

But, there was no shooting.

The initial report from a FNC crew already on the scene reporting on the Baltimore riots, thought they had witnessed a man had been shot while being chased by police. The Baltimore Police quickly started alerting the media that the reports on FNC were not accurate.

Smith quickly apologized to viewers for getting the story wrong, and repeated that apology several times through his broadcast.

"Sounds like what happened is we screwed up" Smith first said. "Mike Tobin thought he saw somebody get shot. And there was a gun and a patient on a stretcher and there is would a woman who said she saw the cop gun him down and there’s going to be violence and all the rest of that. And what we have is nothing. And the truth is, according to police, there is no gunshot victim."

Tobin later appeared on "The Five" explaining what happened.
