In a move that is not a surprise to anyone, WTTG-TV FOX 5 in Washington, D.C. today named Paul McGonagle vice president and news director of the Fox Television Stations property.

It had been rumored that this position would be going to Paul after Cox Media Group took over WFXT-TV FOX 25 in Boston.

Effective immediately, McGonagle will oversee all editorial, business and administrative functions for WTTG, reporting directly to the station’s GM Patrick Paolini.

“Paul’s depth of local news experience in a top market, as well as his impressive tenure with FOX made him the ideal choice,” WTTG VP & GM Patrick Paolini said in a statement. “He is the right leader to continue the momentum we have started here and take FOX 5 in an exciting, new direction.”

McGonagle succeeds Dana Hahn who was recently named the VP-news director of Fox’s San Francisco duopoly of KTVU and KICU.

Most recently, McGonagle was VP-news director at WFXT Boston after serving as WFXT’s assistant news director. Prior to that, McGonagle was a general assignment reporter for WJAR-TV NBC 10 in Providence, RI. While there, he was promoted to assistant news director.

Earlier in McGonagle’s career, he was an investigative reporter for KGAN Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He began his broadcasting career as a reporter and anchor for WNNE Burlington, Vt.

McGonagle graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelor’s degree in communications and politics.

Congrats Paul!
