65 years ago today, WJAR-TV signed on at about 1pm, after a sign-on announcement, the stations first broadcast was a baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Athletics.

WJAR broadcast channel 11 until it moved to channel 10 in 1953. It was Rhode Island's first television station and the fourth in New England. It was owned by The Outlet Company, a department store chain headquartered in Providence, along with WJAR radio (AM 920, now WHJJ; and FM 95.5, now occupied by WBRU).
