With instant access to scores with the Internet, and lots of sports coverage available on cable, local stations have been cutting back on their own sports coverage.
WFSB is no different. The Laurel reports that WFSB is cutting back on sports coverage during its 6pm weekday newscast. There will no longer be a dedicated sports block at the end of the 6pm; sports news will still be reported but no differently than other local news according to management. The 11 pm news will have a local sports segment Wednesday – Sunday, the days that main sports anchor Joe Zone will now work.
John had been with WFSB since 1999, first on a part-time basis, then later joining the station full-time. He anchored the weekend sportscasts, hosted Sports Sunday, and was the co-host of the stations Friday Night Football show. He also reported on sports stories and features.
An Emmy Award winner, John couldn't think of a better job than covering and talking about sports in New England.
He has been nominated for 20 New England Chapter Emmy Awards and has won 6.
He is also a 6 time Edward R. Murrow Regional Award Winner, most recently for his 2015 news documentary "House Family."
"Every game has a story, every athlete has a story, and it is my privilege to share these stories with the viewers," John said. In addition to his dedication to Connecticut high school football on Channel 3's "Friday Night Football" and his sports duties at WFSB, John loves spending time with his wife, Gail, and is the proud father of his daughters, Rilee and Grace.
Before joining WFSB, John was a sports anchor and reporter at Fox Sports Net New England.
He's also worked as a freelance sports anchor, reporter, and host for WLNE, CN8, WEEI radio, and WWZN radio.
Prior to that, John was a sports reporter at WABU-TV in Boston; and was sports director at WGMC-TV in Worcester.
John's last day at WFSB was at the end of December 2016.
