WCVB Channel 5, Boston's ABC-affiliate,  has won five National Headliner Awards winning top marks, including two first-place finishes, for outstanding journalism in its news division and Chronicle news magazine.  Presented by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the annual contest is one of the oldest and largest annual award contests in the country recognizing journalistic merit across the communications industry. 

WCVB was the only New England television station to be honored in this year's 81st annual awards.  WCVB NewsCenter 5 received first place honors in the Newscast category for its coverage of a fire that claimed the lives of two Boston firefighters last April in Boston's Back Bay. WCVB's Chronicle, the nation's most honored and longest running news magazine, also captured a first place award in the Health and Science Reporting category for a story entitled "Battle Against Time," profiling the journey of a veteran reporter documenting his battle with Alzheimer's disease. WCVB's award winning website, www.wcvb.com, took second place honors in the Broadcast Television Station Website category.

First place, "NewsCenter 5 at 11: Back Bay Fire"
Synopsis: Coverage of a nine-alarm fire last April in Boston's Back Bay that claimed the lives of two Boston firefighters.

Third place, "NewsCenter 5 at 11: Revere Tornado"
Synopsis: Coverage of a destructive tornado that tore through Chelsea and Revere last July that had a path length of two miles and path width of 3/8th of a mile, and maximum wind gusts estimated at between 100 and 120 mph.

Broadcast or cable television stations coverage of a live breaking news event

Second place, "Revere Tornado"
Synopsis: Coverage of a destructive tornado that tore through Chelsea and Revere last July that had a path length of two miles and path width of 3/8th of a mile, and maximum wind gusts estimated at between 100 and 120 mph.

First place, "Battle Against Time"
Synopsis: Greg O'Brien is a veteran reporter, with stops at The Boston Herald, Boston Magazine and the Associated Press on his resume. But now he's taking on his toughest assignment: documenting his own battle with Alzheimer's disease.

This comes on the heels of WCVB being honored last month with two Gracie Awards for a NewsCenter 5 report, "Who Says Roseann Can't Run," winning in the TV- Local Market Outstanding Soft News Feature category; and a Chronicle program, "Breaking the Silence," winning in the TV- Local Market Outstanding Magazine category.

National Headliner Awards
Founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit across the country in the communications industry.  The first National Headliner Awards were presented in 1935.  Since then, more than 2,000 Headliner medallions have been presented to outstanding writers, photographers, daily newspapers, magazines, graphic artists, radio and television stations and networks, and news syndicates.
