Phil Lipof is leaving Boston's WCVB ABC 5 to join NECN/NBC Boston, New England One has learned.

NBC Boston | NECNPhil joins the news team led by Kenny Plotnik, his boss and the news director that hired him when he was at WABC 7 in New York City.

An Emmy award-winning journalist, Phil most recently co-anchored WCVB NewsCenter 5 at 5:00pm. According to an email sent by WCVB news director Andrew Vrees, Phil is being assigned to nightside reporting until he leaves the station in July. Maria Stephanos or Ed Harding will co-anchor with JC Monahan until his replacement, Ben Simmoneau, starts at the station.

"I’d like to thank Phil for his many contributions to NewsCenter 5 over the last couple of years and wish him well with his future endeavors" said Vrees in the email.

Phil joined WCVB as an anchor and reporter in December 2013 - it marked a "homecoming" for the Boston native who grew up in Newton, interned at WCVB and previously worked at WHDH.

Phil came to WCVB from WABC-TV 7, ABC's flagship station in New York City, where he anchored the weekend morning news and reported for seven years.

Prior to WABC, Phil spent over five years at WHDH as a reporter and anchor. He has also been an anchor and reporter at WFOR-TV in Miami, FL; WRNN-TV in Kingston, NY; and KIDK-TV in Jackson, WY.

Phil actually began his journalism career at WCVB interning with Chet Curtis and Natalie Jacobson, and considers Curtis his inspiration and mentor.

Phil has covered some of the major stories of the decade so far in his career. In 2013, he returned home to Boston to report on the Marathon bombings, braved 80 mile per hour winds during "Superstorm Sandy" and, less than a year later, reported from the massive boardwalk fire in the same spot. He covered the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, traveled to Israel after Sept. 11 for a special series on terrorism and to Germany to speak with wounded troops.

Phil’s roots in Boston run deep with his mother and 4 siblings still living in the area. His wife Juli is from Haverhill. His father, brother and sister have served on the Board of Alderman in Newton. His mother, now retired, was one of the first women in the world to become a Rabbi serving on a pulpit in Brookline.

A native of Newton, Phil is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse University where he studied speech communication and writing.

When not reporting the news, he enjoys playing guitar, working out and, most of all, spending time with his wife (and former co-anchor at WHDH) Juli Auclair Lipof and their two children Daniella and Dylan.

Phil's last day at WCVB is July 1.
