WCVB Channel 5, Boston's ABC affiliate, has won three National Headliner Awards for outstanding journalism in its news division and website.

 

Presented by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the annual contest is one of the oldest and largest annual award contests in the country recognizing journalistic merit across the communications industry.  WCVB is the only New England television station to be honored in this year's 82nd annual awards.  

"We are truly honored to be recognized, once again, by our peers,” said Bill Fine, WCVB President and General Manager.  "We have an unparalleled team of experienced, local journalists who know the Boston market inside and out.  As a result, our entire news team delivered extraordinary coverage, on all platforms, that impacted our local community.”

First place, wcvb.com 

Recognizing WCVB's news team's efforts to break the biggest stories of the year and the digital team's industry-leading graphic presentation. Highlights of web coverage throughout the year include the station's investigations into the MBTA's winter woes, long-term reporting on the "Baby Doe" case, comprehensive digital coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing trial, as well as several other major stories.

Broadcast or cable television stations continuing coverage of a single news event

Second place, "Marathon Bombing Trial"

WCVB's comprehensive continuing coverage of the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev that began in March 2015 for the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013 – the devastating attack that killed three and left hundreds injured. 

Broadcast or cable television stations coverage of a live breaking news event

Third Place, "Marathon Bombing Verdict"

WCVB's breaking news coverage of the verdict delivered by a Boston jury that found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev guilty on all 30 counts related to the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

National Headliner Awards

Founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit across the country in the communications industry.  The first National Headliner Awards were presented in 1935.  Since then, more than 2,000 Headliner medallions have been presented to outstanding writers, photographers, daily newspapers, magazines, graphic artists, radio and television stations and networks, and news syndicates.  http://www.headlinerawards.com
