Sarah Dunlap Burke is joining ABC-owned WLS-TV Channel 7 in Chicago as assistant news director, effective Aug. 25. Dunlap will report to News Director Jennifer Graves at Chicago's longstanding top-rated station for news.

Burke is leaving her post at WBZ-TV CBS Boston, where she has been the acting news director since March 2014. Among her other responsibilities, Burke led the station's coverage of the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. From April 2013 to March 2014 she was the assistant news director at WBZ in the intensely competitive TV news market.

Said Graves of Burke's appointment at WLS: "Sarah Burke is a strong news leader with impressive experience. She knows how to own a story, produce a compelling newscast and aggressively cover breaking news. Sarah understands the Chicago market's love of news because she grew up here, and that's a great plus for us too."

Prior to her tenure at WBZ, Burke worked in TV news departments in the New York City and Denver, CO. markets.

Born and raised in suburban Elmhurst, IL., Burke received a B.A. in journalism and political science from Miami University of Ohio.

Burke becomes the second female in just the past few weeks to be appointed to a top-level role in a major Chicago TV news department. Earlier this month, Jennifer Lyons was promoted to news director at Tribune Co.-owned WGN-Channel 9 following the retirement of veteran news director Greg Caputo.
