WCVB-TV Channel 5 received the 2014 National Edward R. Murrow award for "Overall Excellence" in the Television (large market) category, the second such honor for Channel 5 in the past three years.  The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) presented the awards, which recognize work of the highest quality produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world, at its annual Awards Dinner and Show in New York City last night.

This prestigious national award recognizes the station's collective work from the past year including its extensive coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombing as well as the outstanding quality of its newscasts, breaking news, continuing coverage, investigations, features, weather and sports.

"It's an incredible honor to receive the National Murrow award for the second time in three years," said WCVB-TV President and General Manager Bill Fine. "An award of this caliber, that's bestowed by our peers, is the highest form of praise."   WCVB News Director Andrew Vrees added, "I am extremely proud of our entire team's collective efforts in this remarkable year of news.  We have a newsroom filled with skilled and dedicated journalists, and this National Murrow award is a testament to their extraordinary talent and hard work."

The RTDNA awards the National Edward R. Murrow for "Overall Excellence" to news organizations who exemplify "the absolute highest standards in serving its audience through quality electronic or digital journalism."  The station won six out of twelve regional Edward R. Murrow Awards earlier this year, far more than any other competitor and all of the competitors combined.

This year, RTDNA awarded 98 national Edward R. Murrow Awards in 13 categories including Overall Excellence, Breaking News, Investigative Reporting and more. RTDNA received more than 4,000 entries during the 2014 awards season, surpassing 2013 by more than 500 entries and setting an all-time record for entries in what proved to be one of the most competitive Edward R. Murrow Awards seasons in RTDNA history.
