NBC 10 was the most watched television news station in Southern New England during the recently completed May ratings period, according to preliminary data from the Nielsen Company. In all head-to-head newscasts, more Southern New Englanders watched NBC 10 News than any other newscast in the Providence-New Bedford market.

This was the first ratings period that WPRI-12 aired identical newscasts on two different networks simultaneously and then combined the two audiences into a single ratings number on one network. Despite this strategy, NBC 10 News remained No. 1 in all head-to-head newscasts and NBC News at 6 a.m., for example, still beat the competition by 23 percent.
