Shakala Alvaranga is joining KLAS CBS 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada as a reporter, New England One has learned.

Shakala joins KLAS from Western Mass News on WGGB-TV ABC 40/FOX 6 and WSHM-LD CBS 3 in Springfield, MA where she has been a weekend evening anchor and a reporter since 2014.

"From the bottom of my heart - thank you to everyone who has reached out to me these past two days. Overwhelmed with all of the love & support" Shakala said on her Facebook page.

"A new chapter in my life is about to begin. I am moving to Las Vegas, Nevada! I'll be joining the 8 News Now team as a reporter! I hope you all will continue to follow me on my journey & watch me grow" she said.

A native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Shakala is a 2014 graduate of Emerson College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.

While at Emerson, Shakala served as the president of the school's award-winning college news station, WEBN News. While she was a member, WEBN took home the Associated Press' college news station of the year award, as well as awards for breaking news coverage and best documentary, among several others. She was one of eight students chosen to work on the organization's television specials. This gave her the opportunity to report at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, the Primetime Emmy Awards, and the 85th and 86th Academy Awards.

Shakala dedicated her college years to honing her skills and learning about issues in Boston that impacted the community. She is a recipient of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Scholarship. Through her hard work, she landed internships with Haverhill Community TV, New England Cable News, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
