"Friends... tonight I sign off for the last time on channel 5" she said on Twitter. "I am warmed by the kindness you have shown me. See you at 6pm"
“All, after 15 years at WCVB, Heather Unruh has decided to leave us today. [WCVB news director] Andrew [Vrees] and I want to sincerely thank Heather for her many contributions to WCVB, and the Boston community where she often offered her talents as an MC to raise money for some great nonprofits. We wish her all the best" said WCVB president and general manager Bill fine in an email to staff this morning.
Heather was most recently co-anchor of WCVB's NewsCenter 5 at 4:30PM & 6:00PM newscasts, and also the medical reporter for the station.
Heather joined WCVB in June 2001. She has anchored breaking news coverage for nearly every major event from the Boston Marathon Bombing and Watertown Capture, to the conviction of Boston Mobster James Whitey Bulger, the resignation of Cardinal Law and elevation of Cardinal Sean O'Malley to Archbishop. She started as a morning anchor, and was promoted to evening anchor during her time at the station.
Some of her accomplishments include multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards, the American Cancer Society’s Sword of Hope Award, the Clarion Award from Women in Communications, Inc., and the top national recognition from the American Women in Radio and Television, the "Grand Gracie," for excellence in reporting. She is also a four time Emmy Award winner.
Prior to joining WCVB, Unruh was the early evening anchor and medical reporter at KFOR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City. The DePauw University graduate also worked at WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Alabama. Unruh served as an anchor and reporter for WBNG-TV in Binghamton, NY in the early 1990's. She also hosted and produced a public affairs series at WVEU-TV in Atlanta.
Throughout her career, Unruh has been actively involved with many charitable organizations including Boston Medical Center, Go Red For Women, and the MSPCA. She sits on an advisory board to the Lung Cancer Alliance and has served on the Regional Board of Directors for the American Heart Association.
Unruh's interest in broadcast journalism began early; as a student, she interned at NewsCenter 5. Spending many summers on Nantucket and eventually holding her wedding on the island, she fell in love with New England. Unruh resides in a Boston suburb with her husband and two children.
Heather anchors her last newscast on WCVB tonight at 6pm.
