Justin Schecker has joined WVIT-TV NBC 30 (NBC Connecticut) in Hartford as a New Haven-based reporter.

"We are pleased to welcome Justin Schecker to NBC Connecticut" station spokesperson Laura Gremelsbacker told New England One. She tells us that Justin will be a dayside reporter out of the stations New Haven newsroom.

Justin joined NBC Connecticut from KGUN-TV ABC 9 in Tucson, AZ where he was most recently a general assignment reporter and fill-in news and sports anchor. He joined KGUN in September 2012 as a video journalist before being promoted in October 2013. While in Tucson, Justin contributed to coverage of major stories such as the deadly Yarnell Hill Fire, the search for missing Isabel Celis and the influx of unaccompanied minors from Central America migrating to the United States. He also reported on the closest midterm race in the country in 2014 when Rep. Ron Barber (D) was defeated by Martha McSally (R) by only 167 votes. He also got to pursue his passion for sports, reporting live from Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, the 2014 and 2015 Sweet Sixteen/Elite 8 in Southern California, and the 2014 World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play.

Prior to KGUN, Justin got his on-air start reporting for WLNS-TV CBS 6 in Lansing, MI as part of his college's journalism residency program. While there, he covered a variety of stories in Michigan, including rallies at the state capitol and U2's 360 world tour.

During college, Justin worked for the award-winning Northwestern News Network, including as News Director during his senior year, and wrote a weekly sports column for the college newspaper. He is a three-time winner of College Student Production Emmy Awards from the Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television and Arts.

He also freelanced for Big Ten Network as an announcer and producer of live online sports broadcasts. In addition, Justin spent a summer interning at WRC-TV NBC 4 in Washington, D.C.    

A native of Silver Spring, MD, Justin is a 2012 graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism where he earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism.
