Ben Simmoneau is joining WCVB ABC 5 as an anchor and reporter, New England One has learned.

Ben Simmoneau is joining WCVB ABC 5 as an anchor and reporter, New England One has learned.

An ward-winning veteran journalist, Ben will anchor NewsCenter 5 at 5PM with co-anchor J.C. Monahan as well as The 10 O'Clock News on MeTV Boston with co-anchor Maria Stephanos. Ben replaces Phil Lipof, who is leaving the station, at 5pm.

"Ben is an award-winning, news-breaking journalist, an experienced anchor, and solid investigative reporter. His many skills will be a valuable asset to WCVB's outstanding news team," said WCVB president and general manager Bill Fine when making the announcement. "We're confident that the addition of Ben will help to continue our news leadership position in the market."

Joining WCVB Channel 5 marks a return to Hearst Television for Ben who began his career at WGAL, the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate in Harrisburg-Lancaster, PA. Ben comes to NewsCenter 5 from WNYW, the Fox flagship station in New York City where he worked as a weekday morning anchor since June 2013. Prior to joining Fox, Ben spent five years working as an anchor and investigative reporter for KYW, the CBS-owned television station in Philadelphia.

Ben is a three-time Emmy winner who has also been honored twice with an Edward R. Murrow award - once at WGAL for investigative reporting and once for his role as part of the team at KYW which won for Station Excellence. Ben's innovative coverage of the 2006 mid-term elections earned him a Walter Cronkite Award from the University of Southern California for excellence in political journalism.

Before graduating from Ithaca College with a journalism degree, Ben worked for Chris Matthews as a researcher on his bestselling book American: Beyond Our Grandest Notions.

In New York, Ben served on the Executive Council of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America Greater New York Chapter. He has also worked in the past with the Children's Miracle Network and Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

An avid runner, Ben also enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with his wife and two children.

Ben starts at WCVB on July 6.
