Hearst Television Inc. has earned its eighth consecutive USC Annenberg Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism.

The award is in recognition of coverage by WCVB-TV ABC 5 in Boston; WMUR-TV ABC 9 in Manchester, NH; WMTW-TV ABC 8 in Portland, ME; WPTZ-TV NBC 5 in Burlington, VT; and the other Hearst Television stations for the 2014 election season.

Compelling storytelling, accuracy and service to citizens in 2014 election coverage are recognized by the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism. The awards, given biennially since 2000, are named for the distinguished journalist and longtime CBS anchor. Winners were announced yesterday by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Hearst Television was noted by the judges for its "impressive, multipronged, multi-platform approach" to covering local political issues. Calling their programming a "public service," the jury praised Hearst for its efforts to push content to its online and mobile applications. The judges were impressed with Hearst's continued "top-down commitment" to political coverage by all its stations.

WCVB's coverage of the 2014 election season included sponsorship and broadcast of several Bay State Gubernatorial debates as part of the Boston Media Consortium. In addition, WCVB's On The Record, a weekly political roundtable featuring timely and provocative discussions with local newsmakers, featured debates among the candidates for the offices of State Treasurer, Massachusetts Attorney General and Massachusetts 6th Congressional District.

WMUR held primary and general election debates, and let viewers learn more about the candidates in its candidate road trip and profile segments.

WMTW also sponsored candidate debates throughout the election season.

The awards will be presented at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 15.
