Erin Kennedy has been named co-anchor of CBS 2 Chicago’s weekday morning (4:30-7:00 a.m.) newscasts. She will join Kris Gutierrez behind the station’s anchor desk beginning May 19.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Jeff Kiernan, Vice President and News Director, CBS 2.
“Erin is an exceptional broadcaster,” Kiernan said. “She’s an experienced news anchor and reporter who will bring an intelligence and warmth to morning news in Chicago.”

“I’m excited to be a part of a community as diverse as Chicago,” Kennedy said. “I learned the business and practice of journalism in the Midwest, beginning at Notre Dame, and my goal has always been to return here to tell the stories that make the people of these communities great.”

Since December 2011, Kennedy has worked as an anchor/reporter for WKYC-TV in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was the station’s lead anchor/reporter for its coverage of the Cleveland kidnapping victims.

Also while at WKYC, Kennedy and her colleagues won an Emmy and a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their coverage of the Chardon School shooting.

Kennedy joined WKYC-TV after working as an anchor/reporter at WPRI and WNAC-TV in Providence, Rhode Island from 2005-11.

She started as a weekend evening anchor, and in 2006 was promoted to anchor/reporter for the stations’ weeknight evening newscasts. Additionally, she was WPRI-TV’s webcast producer and anchor – Webcast en Español – an online newscast in Spanish.

Kennedy began her career in 2003 as a weekend anchor/reporter for KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas.

After six months on the job, she was promoted to weekday anchor/reporter at the station and anchored its two-and-a-half-hour weekday morning newscast and guest co-hosted the Spanish language show, Si Se Puede.

Kennedy graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

A member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, she has reported from Mexico and done extensive reporting on immigration and the drug trade.

Kennedy, who has family in the Chicago area, and her husband, Matthew, celebrated the birth of their first child, Elliot, earlier this year.
