Some people like a good cup of coffee in the morning - but WBZ-TV Meteorologist  Barry Burbank likes his upside down.

On Saturday, Barry was on the morning news with Kerry Connolly.

When they came back from a commercial break, he was holding his coffee cup upside down.

But something was awry, as Barry's cup was actually empty and he was holding his mug upside down.

A viewer posted the photo on Reddit and a Twitter storm soon erupted, with people asking what had gone wrong.

Even Jimmy Fallon poked fun at it in his monologue on Monday’s “Tonight Show” which is the second time in a month a clip from WBZ made the show (the first being Chris McKinnon's live shot on CBS This Morning.)

“What is this thing? Do I write with it?” Fallon said about the upside down mug.

It turns out Barry was actually pulling a prank because no-one ever puts coffee in his cup - or notices that he sometimes changes his tie several times during one broadcast.

“In the past on some mornings I say, ‘you know my cup is always empty nobody ever puts anything my cup,'” Barry joked.

“So I said 'let's go on the air and I’ll have my cup turned upside down and maybe see if people notice that the cup is upside down'. They always say that my cup is always empty, not just half full or half empty, it’s always empty, so there you go, cheers.”

Watch the clip, and Barry explaining what happened to David Wade & Paula Ebben.
