WVIT-TV NBC Connecticut weekday anchor Gerry Brooks took to Facebook today to announce he would be off the air until January 5th as he recovers from cancer surgery.

You can read his note to viewers below.

-----

Greetings, friends. I want to let you know that I will be off the air until January 5th. I know there are those of you who will think I'm taking the ultimate vacation. (I wish.) And there are more of you who may think I'm getting hair transplants. (Not happening.)

Until Monday, I had prostate cancer. Because until Monday, I had a prostate. Now I don't, and I have every reason to believe all traces of cancer went with it. I have known I had prostate cancer for well over a year, and the time had come to do something about it. Robotic surgery was my choice of treatment, and my excellent surgeon says it went quite well.

For those of you in the business, yes, I buried the lead. I didn't want to play this for ratings points in November. All I'll say is, "Gentlemen, get an annual physical. It's important."

I apologize to anyone I know who I didn't have the chance to tell personally. I hope you understand. And I want to publicly thank NBC Connecticut President Ric Harris and News Director Matt Piacente for their support and encouragement. I couldn't have better bosses.

To friends old and new, rest assured I'll be the same as ever, which some may find disappointing.

As for so many of my Facebook friends, I appreciate your choice of NBC Connecticut as your source for local news. I may have preferred keeping this to myself. But as loyal viewers, I thought you deserve an explanation. I'll see you soon.

We wish Gerry a quick and speedy recovery!
