11 Questions with Lisa Hughes

Lisa Hughes currently anchors the 5pm, 5:30pm and 11pm news on WBZ-TV CBS 4 in Boston.

After joining WBZ in 2000 as an anchor, Lisa was named Best Newcomer in TV by Boston Magazine and Best News Anchor by the Improper Bostonian in her first year. Since then, she has covered just about every major news story in New England. Before WBZ, Lisa was a correspondent for CBS Newspath. She has also worked as a reporter and weekend anchor at KIRO-TV in Seattle, WA; an anchor and reporter at KBCI-TV in Boise, ID; and an anchor and reporter for KCBY-TV in Coos Bay, OR.

A native of Moscow, ID, Lisa is a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle where she studied broadcast journalism.

1. What kind of phone do you have, and what are your favorite apps?
 I just bought an iPhone 6. It’s actually still in the box. My favorite apps are Pandora, StumbleUpon & Waze.

2. Favorite and least favorite news topics to cover (besides violent crime)?
 Favorite: stories about people working to reach a goal or to help other people…especially if they’re overcoming a setback. People are capable of extraordinary goodness. Often, it’s people behaving badly who make news. But I love sharing stories about people who are on a mission to do something good. 

 Least favorite: stories about “dangers” lurking in household items or products. I don’t need one more to worry about.

3. If you weren't working in TV news, what would you be doing?
 Working in crisis communications or taking classes in everything from cooking to philosophy.

4. What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
 Scooby Doo

5. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
 Run, read or play with my kids

6. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
 The Galapagos Islands. I’ve always wanted to experience the uniqueness of the place and see all of the creatures.

7. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
 Steve Martin

8. Do you collect anything?
 Books — nonfiction, novels, children’s books, travel books, cook books. I have a Kindle for traveling. But I love books.

9. What are the top 3 played songs on your iPod?
 “Let’s Go Crazy” (Prince)
 “Black Sun” (Death Cab for Cutie)
 "The Only Place” (Best Coast)

10. What is one of your favorite quotes?
 “Life is either a great adventure or nothing.” - Helen Keller

11. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?
 Flying home on a red-eye with my three year-old.
